A simple guide to GST invoices in India

GSTIN, state codes, place of supply — a plain-English walkthrough of what a compliant GST invoice actually needs.
A GST invoice is not just a bill — it is the document that lets your customer claim input tax credit, so getting the details right matters to both of you.
At a minimum, a compliant tax invoice needs your GSTIN, the invoice number and date, the customer details, a description of goods or services, the taxable value, and the tax charged — split into CGST/SGST or IGST depending on the place of supply.
The place of supply decides the split. Within the same state, you charge CGST and SGST. Across states, you charge IGST. Getting the state codes right is what keeps this correct.
Consecutive, unique invoice numbers are a requirement, not a nicety. Gaps or duplicates draw questions during reconciliation, so a system that auto-increments your numbering saves real headaches.
InvoicePro handles the state codes, GSTIN fields, and tax breakdown for you, so a compliant invoice is the default rather than something you assemble by hand each time.
